One of the West’s most iconic hikes is Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park, which is famous for its sheer, dark red sandstone towers carved by the Virgin River. Today we climb up Walter’s Wiggle to the Saddle, where you may choose to continue on the Via Ferrata and to the top of Angel’s Landing (this section is self guided). Desert roads lead us through changing vegetation from the desert sagebrush up to beautiful ponderosas of the high plateau along the Grand Canyon North Rim. Maybe we spot the endemic Kaibab Squirrel, isolated by the surrounding desert, or encounter deer, elk or even bear. Suddenly the land opens up into the immensity of Grand Canyon. A sparsely used trail is today’s hike – the Rainbow Rim Trail. We are granted ever changing sweeping views over the Grand Canyon as we hike along its rim. We start our day with a beautiful sunrise over the Grand Canyon. There is a chance to take a shower at a local campground (approx. $5 pp). Back in the desert we leave the pavement behind to find the longest slot canyon in North America: The Buckskin Gulch. Here you have the opportunity to hike the canyon (self-guided). 12 miles of 500 foot deep, dark Narrows beckon (the Narrows requires proper footwear / poles due to mud). On to our next highlight: Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. This is a rarely visited park due to the lack of infrastructure or roads. The park is famous for its amazing rock formation, “The Wave”. While “The Wave” is accessible by permit only, many areas are open for visitation without permits. Follow your guide along the 4×4 desert tracks for a second night of camping in amazing wilderness. Sunrise is not to be missed and those wanting to get up early should head out to Bryce Point. Our next destination is Kodachrome State Park where we hike far away from the crowds. Returning to the great desert wilderness of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument we head down the Hole in the Rock Road, a historic track carved out by Mormon settlers traveling by covered wagon. Here we can enjoy a great scramble through a fun, narrow, and twisted Slot Canyon. Our hotel is in the small town of Escalante in the midst of splendid desert country. Today, another great adventure awaits – the remote Burr Trail. A dirt track cuts through Capitol Reef to the secluded Notom Bottom Road. We enjoy expansive views over the Henry Mountains and the monocline. North of here we explore and hike a rarely visited slot canyons in the San Rafael Reef. A quick drive brings us to Arches National Park. Here sandstone is layered above thick salt deposits. This leads to instability in the rock, which in turn leads to cracks and erosion. Arches National Park has the world’s largest collection of rock arches with over 2000 currently recorded. We will explore Park Avenue, The Windows, and then hike to the famous Delicate Arch, truly an unforgettable sight. The afternoon finds us at nearby Canyonlands National Park. A short scramble leads to Mesa Arch, before we drive the amazing onelane desert track of the Shafer Trail into the canyon of the Colorado River. We are rewarded with breathtaking views. We head south towards our next destination: Natural Bridges National Monument. This canyon is home to 3 massive stone bridges. First, we will follow a steep slick rock trail descending to Sipapu Bridge. Walking in the canyon we soon reach massive Kachina Bridge covered in rock art. A dirt track leads down the Moqui Dugway to Monument Valley. You have a chance to take a jeep tour (optional, starting at $75 pp) or drive the scenic road yourself. We embark on a fantastic 2-day trek through Canyon de Chelly. The canyon is holy to the Navajo, with several families still living here today. In every alcove and on nearly every wall we find the ruins and rock art representing over 5000 years of inhabitance. To enter the canyon we descend an old stock trail into the twisted Canyon del Muerto. Trekking along the sandy wash we walk past Navajo farms and orchards scattered amongst beautiful 800-year-old Anasazi ruins and numerous rock art panels. There is no need to carry more than you daypack, as the local Navajo crew will bring our camping gear into the farm where we will spend the night. There is a chance to climb the ancient slick rock trails surrounding our camp tonight. Camp 1 night. After a hearty camp breakfast we continue our trek. We soon reach the confluence with Canyon de Chelly and head up canyon to the iconic White House Ruin. Here we say goodbye to our local guides as our last highlight awaits: the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, at 450km long, 1600 m deep, and 16 km wide. The Colorado River has carved the canyon through layers of red sandstone, some of them 2 billion years old. The views from the south rim are spectacular. We have all day to spend at this amazing sight with a choice of hikes, from easy to hard (hikes in Grand Canyon National Park are self-guided due to permit regulations). This island has preserved much of its original Hawaiian character and culture. Not only is the Big Island by far the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, it is also the most diverse, offering active volcanoes, vast coastlines with white, black and green beaches, rain forests, giant waterfalls, lava deserts, and ocean hot springs. With our local knowledge, we will explore many hidden sites, hike to remote beaches full of sea turtles, hike into the heart of an active volcano, and with a little luck, we will get REALLY close to lava. Stop at Puukohola and Lapakahi, both remarkable sites of ancient Hawaiian temples. We walk along the shore, looking for turtles resting on the wild beaches. In the evening, we find ourselves at a local hang out, the iconic Lava Lava Beach Restaurant, where we hope to enjoy a classic Hawaiian sunset (dinner is NOT included). Today we will explore the fabulous “City of Refuge” or “Pu’uhonua O Honaunau” National Historical Park, which houses a picture-perfect Polynesian village perched on lava cliffs. We have time for some shorter walks, to tour the village and to swim/snorkel in one of the islands’ best reefs before we look at the Captain Cook Monument and the bay where he was slain. In the afternoon, we can choose to do a guided kayak trip (approx. $100, not included), a boat tour to see dolphins, the world-famous snorkeling excursion with manta rays (approx. $100/pp, not included), or explore remote beaches north of Kona. The morning finds us hiking in beautiful Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park. Along the coral beaches we walk to ancient fishponds and impressive structures created by the ancient people. In the afternoon we head over the Saddle Road, one of the most spectacular roads in the world. We will climb from sea level to 2000m, between two majestic volcanoes: Mauna Kea (4207m) and Mauna Loa (4169m), passing from tropical forest to arid desert. At Puu Huluhulu trails lead through fascinating formations and vegetation spared by eruptions. After checking into the hotel, we spend the evening at Uncle Billy’s, one of the most authentic Hawaiian celebrations in the remote Puna district. After a leisurely morning, we explore Volcano National Park. This national park is part of Mauna Loa, the world’s largest shield volcano. This national park is remarkable as it sits on the actual hot spot where islands are continually being created, producing never-ending volcanic activity and eruptions. (Check conditions online at www.nps.gov). Trails lead through massive, cooled craters, steep banks venting sulfurous gasses, and fern-covered lava tubes. This is truly a primordial landscape, raw and still in the making. Our daytime walks will take us along Kilauea Crater’s Rim, edged with cloud forests of tree ferns and native Ohia. The views are spectacular. If the lava flows above ground, we may organize a walk to erupting lava (additional fees may apply, depending if the lava is on private land or inside the national park). The group may also choose to visit Akaka Falls, and Waipio overlook, swim in the ocean at Richardson Beach Park, and / or rent 4×4 vehicles to drive to the top of Mauna Kea to enjoy sunset. Heading back to Kona, we soon reach Punaluu Beach, a well-known black sand beach where turtles rest. Then we continue to the wind-swept southernmost point in the US. We walk on dirt tracks towards the famous Green Sand Beach, created by olivine crystals from ancient volcanic eruptions. We return to Kona for one last night. Royal Kona (3-star) or similar, 1 night. Flight to Lihue on Kauai and transfer to the hotel. Kauai is called the Garden Isle and considered by many to be the most beautiful of the islands. Kauai is also the oldest island where volcanic activity has been dormant for over one million years. Erosional forces have created a truly stunning landscape of sheer volcanic cliffs and spires. The afternoon is reserved for you to enjoy the local beaches. Kauai Shores Hotel (3-star) or similar, 3 nights.

When Mark Twain visited the islands, he dubbed Waimea Canyon the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. Both the canyon’s deep red color and its size are remarkable. An early start brings us to the fantastic Kalalau Lookout, with incredible views over the wild North Shore 1,200 m (4,000 ft) below. Then we embark on a hike through one of earth’s wettest spots in the famous Kokee State Park. The Awa’awapuhi Trail will lead us to amazing viewpoints over the remote North Shore. On a rainy day, we may choose to shift the walk to the drier side of the canyon at the Cliff/Canyon/Black Pipe complex. The elevation is 1,000 – 1,200 m (3,300 – 4,000 ft), which makes for crisp air. With a little luck, we will see the endangered Nene Goose, a Hawaiian native. Walk: 5 hrs, 9 miles / 15 km, elevation difference: +/-500 m

Kauai’s North Shore is famous for its one-of-a-kind scenery. A narrow, winding road leads to the far end of the island where we hike the famous Kalalau Trail high above ocean cliffs. The views are superb. (Extensive flooding resulted in the closure of this trail in 2018. In the event that the trail is not reopened the groups will instead hike the Shipwreck Beach Trail instead.) In the afternoon, we can choose to stroll in the beautiful Limahule Botanical Gardens (a small entry fee will be charged) and/or swim at one of the famous, beautiful, white sand beaches, or look for coastal and pelagic birds at the nearby wildlife refuge. Time-permitting, there is a chance to fly by helicopter over the cliffs of Kauai (approx. $210 for a one-hour flight, optional), considered by many to be one of the world’s best heli rides. Then we transfer to the next highlight of our tour — Maui. Maui is a large island consisting of two massive, dormant shield volcanoes. Of the three islands visited so far, this island is the most tourist filled. From December to April, Alaskan humpback whales give birth on Maui’s west side and can be easily seen from whale-watching boats. Molokini crater, a submerged cinder cone, is also a world-famous snorkel and dive site. Our hotel is centrally located and within walking distance of beaches and shopping. Today we embark on a long driving day. We start out very early on the remarkable Road to Hana, a cliff hanging narrow road skirting the remote side of Maui. We stop at Waianapanapa State Park, where we can walk over cliffs on the ancient Kings Trail. Then we head to a hidden gem, the remote red sand beach in Hana, where giant waves break on the cliffs. Our tour around the east end of the island concludes with vast views of Maui’s high-country.

A remote part of Maui is the Polipoli State Park, nestled on the flank of the majestic Haleakala Volcano. Here at 2000 m elevation, we enjoy fantastic views over the western side of the island as we hike through the amazing forest and fields, offering ever-changing views of the ocean and nearby islands. On this morning you have the chance to witness sunrise in Haleakela National Park, the massive shield volcano towering over Maui. In the morning, we leave the city via the famous Golden Gate Bridge, providing the opportunity to walk across for those who wish to savor the views. We will then head for Yosemite National Park, where we will enjoy the spectacular experience of strolling beneath mighty stands of colossal Sequoia trees. This family of ancient giants have been seen to grow to 275 feet tall (84 meters), and aged to be over 2,000 years old! Our accommodations are in the heart of Yosemite Valley at Curry Village, the hub of activity in the valley, providing direct access to all of the hiking trails. We will spend two nights here in “tent cabins”, which are rustic cabins with beds and bedding, concrete floors, canvas walls, and communal bathrooms. Those up for the Half Dome climb can leave at 6 am to challenge themselves on this extraordinary peak. The rest of the group will take a more leisurely morning, with breakfast followed by a drive up to Glacier Point, the most impressive viewpoint in the park. From here, high above the valley, we may survey the stunning walls of Half Dome and gaze down at the valley floor far below. Three different walks, varying in length, difficulty, and views are available from Glacier Point: two walks head down into Yosemite Valley (self-guided) or you may enjoy a loop walk with your hiking guide along the valley rim. In the morning, we depart Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass, crossing over the Sierra Nevada Mountains at 10,000 feet (3048 m). Time and weather permitting, we may hike and scramble to the top of Lembert Dome, offering expansive views over the Tuolumne Meadow. The day will conclude with a short exploration of Mono Lake, one of the world’s oldest lakes, famous for its white Tufa towers formed by hot springs. After a short drive, we reach Death Valley National Park. This area is known for extreme weather conditions and temperatures, and is one of the hottest places on earth. We will explore the golden sand dunes, which contrast with the stark brown and black hillsides; Badwater with its poisonous springs; the Devil’s Golf Course formed by salt deposits; and the colorful formations at Zabriskie Point. Zion National Park is an 800 m deep sandstone canyon carved by the Virgin River. The scenery is stunning. Zion is famous for the iconic hike to Angel’s Landing, and the many slot canyons. We have all day to explore this fabulous park. You have the option to enjoy a hike to Emerald Pools, where water cascades into shaded pools, or you can hike on your own to Angel’s Landing. Leaving early we soon reach Bryce Canyon NP. For many, Bryce is the most beautiful of the American National Parks. Hiking paths wind through radiant red and pink towers of stone, which contrast beautifully with blue skies and green pines. At sundown, be awed by an unforgettable color play on the formations. We have all day to relax at the Grand Canyon! We explore the edge of the canyon, a dream location for photography. You can do a self-guided easy hike along the West Rim to the beautiful outlook, Hermit’s Rest. We recommend the amazing helicopter tours and/or the IMAX theater (to be paid locally, they are not included in the tour package) as well as watching the famous sunsets or renting bikes (not included) to explore the rim of this amazing sight.

After an absence of 100 years, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1995. Reintroducing the top predator to this complex ecosystem has been an incredible experiment. Today, we join a naturalist looking for wolves in the Lamar Valley. For sure we will see herds of bison that spend the winter here. On snowshoes we explore trails among the herds of bison and antelope. Tonight grab a swimsuit and try the hot springs! Today, we head out on snow covered park roads to famous Old Faithful. Most of Yellowstone’s roads are closed in the winter and only accessible via snow coach. Our excursion takes us to multicolored boiling mud pots and fumaroles before arriving at the steaming Upper Geyser Basin. Here we enjoy a walk through the very active geysers and geothermal features while waiting for the explosion of Old Faithful. There is a chance at seeing frost covered bison, elk and bald eagles. Upon return we settle in for another group dinner.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is a deep canyon carved into soft rock and basalt cliffs. We walk along the flat surface of the snow packed road with amazing views of the canyon and Calcite Springs. Elk, bison, mule deer and big horn sheep are our companions today. Tower Falls is one of the highlights of any snowshoe trip in Yellowstone. In the afternoon we depart to the West Entrance of Yellowstone. Group dinner in our family suite. We spend the day here in the shadow of the mighty 4198-meter Grand Teton. Then, we enjoy a ranger led sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge, the winter range of 7000 elk. 6pm meeting and tour orientation. Now is the chance to see and explore Reno, Nevada known as the “Biggest Little City of the World.” We do a city walking tour than head over the Reno’s Truckee River “Riverwalk District” and have dinner as a group.

We depart early for our first stop of the day in Virginia City, NV. Here you see and experience the oldest living Ghost town of the USA West. Topics for learning include Comstock Load, Samuel Clements and much more. After Virginia City, we head to tour Carson City, Nevada State Capital. Our next stop is a hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The trail from Carson Pass to beautiful 9,000 foot Winnemucca Lake is a local favorite, known for its gorgeous wildflowers and excellent views. This is a great hike for photographers, because of the picture perfect scenery, and the small elevation change and rewarding sights.

Lake Tahoe is one of the cleanest, deepest mountain lake in the world. Its elevation is 6200 feet (1890 meters) and is surrounded by gorgeous Mountains and wealth of activities. Lake Tahoe previously served as a transcontinental route for first railroad and later highways. Exploring Lake Tahoe’s towns that encompass the lake might make you feel like you’re swaggering through a modernized downtown from the Old West. You will have a chance to go swimming after our hike and see the 90 feet of underwater visibility for yourself. Unbelievable!

Early start to Yosemite National Park. We travel one of American West’s most beautiful, scenic roads in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We stop for a coffee in an old western town and than a swim and picnic at Tenya Lake, Yosemite. On our way to Yosemite Valley, we stop for a short hike to see the giant sequoias at Tuolumne Grove. Panorama Trail one of the most impressive hikes in Yosemite National Park and maybe the world. The trail descends past Illilouette Falls on a course with spectacular views of Half Dome at nearly every turn. The hike follows the Mist Trail alongside two famous Yosemite waterfalls, Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall, making this hike a must do. The Panorama Trail is a nearly 10-mile long point-to-point hike from the top to the bottom of Yosemite Valley.
